Well pump replacement cost

The short answer

As of October 2026, This Old House puts the well pump replacement cost at $900 to $2,500, and the EPA's private well guide says a pump is often $1,200 to $1,800. In Idaho, the state has its own electrical license for water pump installers, and its water agency keeps driller reports for most wells drilled since July 1987.

What a new well pump costs

This Old House puts the cost of replacing a well pump at $900 to $2,500. It says the price depends on the type of pump, the depth of the well and how hard the install is.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guide for private well owners, using 2019 data, says a replacement pump is often $1,200 to $1,800.

The pump is only part of the bill. This Old House, pricing pumps at The Home Depot, lists about $200 for a shallow well jet pump and $500 for a submersible pump, before installation.

The Idaho Department of Water Resources keeps Well Driller's Reports, and its well search shows "well size and depth, geology, depth to water, water levels, flow rate". It says the database "contains most of the Well Drillers Reports from July 1987 to current."

Depth matters for the price, so look up your well's report before you talk to a pump business.

The state's licensing division, DOPL, says: "A permit is required when any electrical, plumbing or HVAC work is performed."

DOPL's inspector list sets electrical inspection days of Tuesday and Thursday for Bonners Ferry, Copeland, Moyie Springs and Naples. Eastport's day is Thursday, and Porthill's is Tuesday.

What changes the price

  • Depth. This Old House says deeper wells take more labor and special equipment to pull and reset a pump.
  • Pump type. It says submersible pumps usually cost more to install than jet pumps, because they sit deep in the well.
  • Weight and gear. Some pumps weigh more than 100 pounds, and deep submersible pumps need special equipment to pull without damaging the pipe or wiring, This Old House says.
