How much does it cost to remove a tree
National cost guides give a wide range, about $200 to $2,000, because trees vary so much.
Height drives the price more than anything. This Old House, using Homewyse and Angi estimates, lists $150 to $450 for a tree 30 feet or less, and $1,000 to $2,000 for one 80 feet or more.
The stump is often a separate charge. This Old House says stump removal "is usually a separate service." So ask what a bid covers: the stump, the cleanup, and where the wood goes.
Costs at a glance
Nationally, taking down a tree usually costs $200 to $2,000 a job, and removing a stump $70 to $500.

Tree trimming cost
Trimming takes off limbs and leaves the tree standing. NerdWallet puts trimming at about $200 to $760 a tree, and more than $1,800 for a very tall one. It doesn't name a data source.
Ask for the price per tree and for the whole visit, so two bids line up.
Stump grinding cost
Grinding chews the stump down with a rotating blade. This Old House puts grinding at around $200 and says it usually takes the stump 4 to 6 inches below ground level.
This Old House says most professionals charge $2 to $5 per inch of the stump's diameter, and many set a minimum fee of $75 to $100. Measure across the stump, and the per-inch rate gives you a rough number before any bid comes in.
Tree work costs around here
A tree near a power line can change who does the work. Northern Lights, the electric co-op, says that depending on the job it may trim or remove a tree that threatens its lines, or lower the lines so "the owner's qualified tree contractor can complete the work safely." It may also decide that "the work is the property owner's responsibility."

Grinding a stump goes below the surface. Northern Lights says to contact 811 "before every project that disturbs the ground," and that "The 811 service is free."

Felling and storm damage: where to look
This guide doesn't cover how to fell a tree or clear storm damage. These official pages cover trees near power lines and safety rules for tree work:
