A tree job can come with two more questions: is the tree near a power line, and where does all the wood go?

The City of Bonners Ferry has its own electric utility. The city says it "offers water, sewer, garbage and electricity to the residents in its service area," and its utilities page has its contact number.

Brush and rounds can go to the county. A household can bring up to 1,000 pounds of wood waste a day to the main landfill on Hillcrest Road at no charge, then $0.05 a pound. The three rural collection sites take wood waste too, up to the same daily amount. Stumps are $0.05 a pound, and only the main landfill takes them. Those fees took effect April 1, 2025.

Tree trimming, removal or stump grinding

Tree trimming takes off limbs and leaves the tree standing. A tree removal service takes the whole tree down, and may or may not grind the stump on the same visit. Stump grinding chews the stump down below the ground so you can mow or plant over it.

Ask which of these a bid covers. Prices for each are often quoted apart, so two bids for the same tree can look far apart.

Costs at a glance

Nationally, removing a tree usually costs $200 to $2,000, and removing a stump $70 to $500.
