How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Idaho DEQ says septic tanks require pumping every 3 to 5 years. The real answer for your house depends on how big the tank is and how many people use it, and that is what the calculator works out.

How the septic pumping calculator works

  1. Pick your tank size. If you don't know it, pick your bedrooms, and the calculator uses the smallest tank Panhandle Health District allows for a new system that size.
  2. Pick how many people live there year-round.
  3. It reads the years between pumpings from Oregon State University Extension's chart (below).
  4. If you enter the year it was last pumped, it adds those years to find when the next pumping falls.

What it assumes

  • A year-round home. The chart was figured to keep at least 24 hours of wastewater in the tank, with half the solids breaking down.
  • No garbage disposal. With one, the tank fills faster.
  • If you go by bedrooms, your tank is the smallest size allowed for a new system. Older systems may have smaller tanks.

This is Oregon State University Extension's chart, copied as published. For a family of 2 with a 1,000-gallon tank, it is about every 5.9 years. For a family of 4, about every 2.6 years.

A Bonners Ferry example

Say a family of 4 lives in a 3-bedroom house outside Bonners Ferry with a 1,000-gallon tank, last pumped in 2024.

  1. The chart's 1,000-gallon row, 4-person column: 2.6 years.
  2. 2024 + 2.6 = 2026.6, so plan the next pumping for 2026 or 2027.
  3. That is a bit sooner than Idaho DEQ's 3 to 5 year rule, because four people use a fairly small tank.
